Breaking New Ground In Zambia

It is always an exciting thing when God opens doors of ministry in new regions! And equally exciting is how God leads us to those open doors…

When the Apostle Paul was visiting the Roman city of Troas (Turkey), God gave him a vision one night. As he was sleeping he saw a Macedonian man who came to him begging, “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9). Paul’s heart was stirred. Immediately he and his team concluded that this was a call from God, and that the LORD was opening a door for ministry in Europe. They packed their bags and departed.

In recent years we have seen God opening new doors of ministry right here in Africa. One of these doors is to the nation of Zambia. On a business trip this year to Livingstone (capital of the southern province of Zambia), one of our pastors, Walter Kohrs, met our own Macedonian man, a Zambian driver by the name of David. David is a committed Christian who loves the Lord and serves as an elder in his church. When he heard about our Equip Discipleship training conferences he was eager to host one in Livingstone for the local pastors. This conference is scheduled for the week of November 23rd, 2015.

Situated only 6 miles/10km from the spectacular Victoria Falls, the city of Livingstone draws many tourists. Its population consists of approximately 140,000 inhabitants. The city is named after the famous missionary, Dr. David Livingstone, who first arrived in Zambia in 1853. Livingstone struggled to gain Zambian coverts for Christ, but his efforts inspired other European missionaries to stop the slave trade and to spread the gospel in Africa, causing the spread of Christianity in Zambia.

As a nation, Zambia is considered one of the most highly urbanised areas in Sub-Saharan Africa with more than 40% of the population living in urban areas. Zambia has over 70 ethnic groups and over 70 languages, with the main local languages being Nyanja and Bemba, spoken in the capital of Lusaka.

Although declared to be a Christian nation and with over 80% of Zambians professing faith in Christ, there are still many amongst those who have yet to come to true salvation in Jesus Christ. This is due to the lack of Biblical teaching and the promotion of Biblical Christianity. The Equip Discipleship Training Conference aims to provide church leaders with the skills for Biblical discipleship and evangelism needed within the church.

This year’s Equip Livingstone conference will be led by Pastor Demitri Nikiforos and Pastor Walter Kohrs, who will both be teaching in Livingstone and at the same time assessing the spiritual needs of the local churches. Please keep them in prayer as they embark on this exciting new mission.

Get involved!

  • For lasting relationships to be formed with the local pastors and leaders.
  • For the Holy Spirit’s guidance and empowering.
  • For good fruit from the conference, especially in the area of children’s ministry and discipleship training.
